North Leitrim Regional Water Supply Scheme – Phase II – Water Treatment and Distribution Supply
The overriding strategic objective of the project is to provide a sustainable supply of wholesome drinking water in full compliance with European Communities Drinking Water Regulations (ECDWR) to all consumers in the North Leitrim Regional Water Supply Scheme Area. In realising this objective the Project will have a significant positive influence and benefit on the lives of some 10,000 people which equates to approximately 40% of the total population of County Leitrim.
The early completion in November 2016 of an Advance Pipeline Project in the Rossinver/Kiltyclogher area facilitated the permanent removal of boil water notices for the Kiltyclogher Scheme removing the scheme from the EPA Remedial Action List and meeting customer services obligations in terms of water quality and availability.
In order to make a sustainable supply of quality drinking water available to consumers in the North Leitrim area, the existing water treatment plant at Moneyduff is being upgraded and extended to an overall treatment capacity of 5,500m3/day. The overall North Leitrim Regional Water Supply Scheme – Phase II consists in addition to the extension and upgrading of the existing Moneyduff Water Treatment Plant, of the extension of the existing supply network to Mullies/Brackary GWS, Leckaun GWS, Fivemilebourne PWS, Kiltyclogher PWS and Rossinver PWS.
The main contracts at construction/procurement under Phase II include:
- Upgrade and Extension of Moneyduff Water Treatment Plant
Civil and Mechanical & Electrical Works associated with the extension and upgrading of Moneyduff WTP to 5,500m3/day. In advance of the Upgrade to Moneyduff WTP, the existing Water Abstraction Order (WAO) from Lough Gill was increased from 5.5Ml/d to 8Ml/d. To facilitate this WAO, a full Environmental Impact Statement was prepared to assess the impact of increased water levels to Lough Gill and its effects on recreational activities and amenities. (Construction commenced January 2017).
