Letterkenny Leisure Centre

This project involved the design of a reinforced concrete framed multi-storey sports building including pool hall, events hall, gymnasium, changing rooms, biomass boiler house, plant room and external store. This new leisure complex is located adjacent to the River Swilly. The site covers an area 3 ha and the complex has both external and internal leisure facilities.

Overall the foot print for the building extends to 8,500 m2 and the range of facilities developed include a Major Sports Hall with seating for 2,000 people, a 25m long 6 lane competition Swimming Pool with viewing gallery and toddler / learner pool along with flume slides.

The project presented our Structural Team with a wide variety of challenges from start to finish. All structural elements are piled and the building structure incorporates both Reinforced Concrete and Structural Steel members. Within the pool area, 26m long x 1.5m deep Glulam Roof Beams are employed, while the Major Sports Hall has 25m long Structural Steel Trusses. Extensive glazing elements along with Profile Sheeting were employed on the external element of the building, all designed to our Structural Team’s approval to meet with industry standards.

All structural members were designed in-house with the objective being to provide a well balanced cost effective approach to the overall project, while adding to the finished architectural design advanced in the different sections of the project.
