Glasshouse Hotel, Sligo
The Glasshouse Hotel is situated on a superb site overlooking the River Garavogue and Hyde Bridge in the heart of Sligo City Centre. The Hotel development project consisted of a multi-storey (up to 8 storeys) hotel and apartment building over a 3 storey basement car park, on the site of an existing hotel directly on the bank of the Garavogue River. The striking architectural characteristic of this building, which towers above the river, confirms the challenge presented to our in-house Structural Design Team.
The structural steel frame selected to support this architectural winning design blends completely within the entire glazed vertical cladding. The building includes striking non vertical front elevation and structural elements of the project, were carried out below tidal waters, on and within a very confined site in the city centre.
A secant pile wall was provided to support and protect the excavation of the basement which was constructed in in-situ reinforced concrete. The super-structure, including the sloped feature, glazed facades, are supported on a steel frame with precast hollowcore and composite steel/concrete floors. This provided an efficient and practical solution to the constraints of a restricted city centre site, whilst maximizing the architectural features of the hotel which is already a modern landmark of Sligo.
The total area of the project was 29,000m2 which included: Hotel and Apartments 20,000m2 and Car Park/Basement 9,000m2. The project presented many varied and exciting demands on our Structural Design Team and overall proved, that from with our own resources, Jennings O’Donovan can provide cost effective solutions to high rise projects of this nature, located on a restricted and confined urban sites.
