Barnesmore Wind Farm, Co. Donegal – Repowering
Jennings O’Donovan & Partners Limited were engaged by ScottishPower Renewables to prepare a planning application for the repowering of Barnesmore Windfarm County Donegal. The application was submitted to An Bord Pleanála in December 2019 as a Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) project. It is the first formal application for the repowering of a Wind Farm in Ireland.
The project proposals include for the decommissioning and removal of 25 no. existing wind turbines, which have been in operation since 1997, and replacing them with 13 no. larger wind turbines with a maximum ground to blade tip height of up to 180m. The proposed development maximum export capacity will exceed 65 MW. Upgrade works are proposed for the existing on-site Golagh Substation along with works on the existing grid connection, whereby a new direct connection to Clogher Substation is proposed. A 15 MW energy storage facility is also planned.
The application is due to be decided upon by An Bord Pleanála in June 2020.
