Oldcastle Sewerage Scheme Goes to Tender

Jennings O’Donovan are the consulting engineers to Meath County Council for Oldcastle Sewerage Scheme.  The Council is currently advancing the procurement of the Scheme and tender documents are to issue to those prequalified contractors later this week.  The Contract is being procured by the restricted procedure and the form of contact is the Public Works Contract for Civil Engineering Works designed by the Employer.  In general, the works consist of civil, mechanical and electrical works associated with the construction of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant, Sewer Pumping Station upgrading works and the construction of new sewers in the town of Oldcastle.

The new treatment works has been designed to service a population equivalent of 3,500.  The treatment process includes preliminary screening, an anoxic stage, aeration, clarification and tertiary treatment.  Sludge thickening and dewatering of sludges generated by the process also form part of the design.  The principal units to deliver the treatment requirements to a stringent effluent standard of 10mg/l BOD and 10 mg/Suspended Solids are:

-                Inlet Works and Pump Station          -       Sand Filter (Tertiary) Treatment

-                Storm Holding Tank                            -       Picket Fence Thickener

-                Anoxic Tank                                           -       Sludge Press Building

-                Aeration Tanks                                      -       Administration Building

-                Clarifiers

Works to the collector sewer network within the town of Oldcastle consist of some 3,000 metres of new foul and combined sewers and rising mains varying in diameter up to 600mm and including micro tunneling requiring the services of a specialist contractor.  There is also the upgrading of a major pumping station in the town, the Cavan Street Pumping Station.

Jennings O’Donovan Project Manager for the Scheme is Tomas McGloin.  Talking to Tomas, he says that the pre-qualification process was completed late last year and the final amendments and review of the contract documents is nearing completion and will be issued later this week to those contractors who pre-qualified.  Tomas fully expects the scheme to advance to construction later this year.  Tomas goes onto say that this is a fairly major scheme in the current economic climate with an overall project value of approximately €8 million.

Readers of the Blog may remember Oldcastle Sewerage Scheme was the first project company founder Austin Jennings worked on following graduation from College back in 1937.  Whatever would Austin be thinking now as another reincarnation of Oldcastle Sewerage Scheme goes to tender seventy five years later in 2012.

Nazareth House Reaches 50% Completion Stage

Driving into Sligo along the N4 National primary route, the entrance to the town is marked by a large roundabout at Summerhill.  It is notable that at either side of the roundabout, major construction projects are underway, the new school at Summerhill College and the residential care units at Nazareth House.  Jennings O’Donovan are heavily involved in both of these projects fulfilling the role of civil/structural engineers on the design teams.  The combined spend on these developments is in excess of €12 million.

Sean Martyn is the Jennings O’Donovan Project Manager on Nazareth House.  Speaking with Sean during the week, he said that construction is going well on the development with the milestone 50% completion stage having just been reached.  This is an ambitious development being undertaken by the Nazareth House Association.  On completion, it will see 48 primary residential care units being delivered for the benefit of those in the community advancing in years.  It follows on from a 2-storey extension to the main Nazareth House building including the provision of 12 bedrooms and remedial works to living quarters, a project on which Jennings O’Donovan were also civil/structural engineers.

The footprint of the current development for the 48 residential care units extends to an overall area of over 3,200 square metres in 9 separate building blocks.  In speaking with Sean, he particularly noted how much the ground conditions varied across the site.  This resulted in Sean designing three different foundation types for the 9 individual building blocks,  reinforced concrete raft foundations, pile foundations and strip foundations.  The civil/structural design evolved in an iterative manner as Sean worked closely with the Design Team in achieving the most sustainable economical valued engineering solution.  The contract for the Residential Care Units is to the new Department of Finance Public Works Contract.  Construction completion is expected to be realized in October 2012.

Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland Young Engineer of the Year Award 2011

Well done to James Conlon on making his formal submission on Friday last January 27 to the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland (ACEI) for the Young Engineer of the Year Award 2011.  The stipulated requirements for eligibility for the title of Young Professional Engineer are through the demonstration of excellent communication skills, business acumen, technical capabilities and strong ethical values.  James, in his submission prepared a personal statement outlining how he has developed these qualities and skills during his career with Jennings O’Donovan.  He also prepared a project statement setting out his role on a particular project development as was required for the competition.  James chose the 145MW Shragh Wind Farm, the first wind farm development to go through the Strategic Infrastructure Development procedures for his project statement.

We wish James well with his submission and again highly commend him on taking up the challenge.
