Sweida (Syria) Water Supply Scheme

The project involved design, supervision of implementation and provision of technical assistance as required for all aspects of the supply of potable water for the city of Sweida (design population 150,000) and its regional rural governorate area (design population 325,000).  Water sources included impoundment, natural springs and deep boreholes.  Existing supply systems were appraised and upgraded and new works were provided as required. Detailed designs and contract documents were prepared for both civil and mechanical/electrical work involved in the provision of treatment plants and water storage and distribution.

Local engineers were trained in the methods of modern design, construction and project operation and maintenance.  A complete Water Masterplan for the city of Sweida was completed to facilitate expansion of the city during the next 30 years. Technical assistance was also provided to the local E.U. office, Damascus, which involved assessing projects proposed for implementation under E.U. financing.

Project locations were visited nationwide and designs assessed and amended through discussions with the original designers.

A programme for water conservation through the reduction of water wastage and the detection of leakages was included in these projects.

Financial studies, proposals and cost estimates were also carried out.
