Nicosia (Cyprus) Sanitation Project

Background

Continued expansion of the sewage collection system in Nicosia has resulted in serious overloading of the existing sewage treatment plant.  This overloading has resulted in the production of strong unpleasant odours, which have continued intermittently in recent years causing general nuisance to the public in the Nicosia area.

The efficiency of the treatment process is also affected by overloading, resulting in continued pollution of the environment

Area Serviced & Project Location

The Nicosia Sanitation System encompasses zones on both sides of the ‘Green Line’ within the City thus servicing one area under the effective control of The Government of the Republic of Cyprus, and a second area on the Turkish Cypriot side.

The existing treatment plant is located in the area North of the ’Green Line’ on the Turkish Cypriot side and it is proposed to extend this plant at this location to abate current problems and to provide for future development.

Proposals

It is proposed to extend existing plant with the addition of Anaerobic Ponds, Facultative Lagoons, Maturation Ponds and associated works.  The level of maintenance required in the proposed plant will be low and thus proposals are very suited to the environment.

Proposals are expected to cater for the Residential, Commercial and Industrial development of Nicosia to the year 2005.
